Custom-Built Furniture in Hong Kong

4 January 2010 471 views 3 Comments

I talk about space savings tips in Hong Kong and I do mention the benefits (and cost) of going custom furniture and after many months of debate, I finally went out and bought a customized bunk bed to maximize the space and sleeping capacity.

I am sorry about the state of the bed - unkept and ruly looking, but I am not selling furniture, merely showing you the unit! Ha ha… Anyways, the unit is amazing, let me outline its features:

  • Stairs to the upper bunk instead of traditional rung ladder
  • Rounded edges everywhere for safety
  • Added height in upper bunk bed edge to minimize falling off
  • Bean-shaped holes (that act as stair assistance & peek holes)
  • Storage under the stairs and bed (drawers & lift up storage under the mattress)
  • Built-in book shelf under the upper bunk
  • Closet under the upper bunk with both shelving and hanging space
  • Fit to perfection customization
  • Customized colours and design

Price:  $18,000 HKD
ETA:  30 days after confirmation of design
Vendor:  Majestic International

They charge by the foot and will come to your house to measure exact space.  I was so impressed with the fit of the furniture (see enclosed pictures of how well the contoured the steps to my floor edge).  I will admit though that I have heard mixed reviews of this company.

My rating of the whole custom furniture experience with a large local company (out of 10 stars):

Product:  9/10
Delivery Time: 5/10
Price & Value:  7/10
Customer Service:  7/10 (includes sales and installation folks)

My children LOVE the bed.  It’s like their own secret play area, but supervision is definitely required while they are up there (especially the 2 year old).  Since the bed is only 5′ in length, we are using a customized foam mattress.  We had to sacrafice some length for the stairs and my daughter will take awhile to get past 5 feet anyways.  It is definitely something to consider if your house is running out of room (for people and stuff alike!).

Here are some photos I’d like to share:

WOW. This looks cool! Thanks for sharing - it is definitely something that I have to think about two - three years down the road. I love the simple lines and the color!

Do the price include the customized foam mattress?

No, the foam mattress was a left over from the previous IKEA bed. However, a quotation for a 5′ x 3′ foam mattress from MAJESTIC = $800 HKD.
