How to Come Up With Content For a Blog
Because my readership has grown - especially amongst colleagues (since I’ve accidentally let the cat out of the bag), people ask me two key question:
- How do you have time to maintain a blog?
- How do you come up with the content?
Here’s a quickie post to your fathlomless and perpetual questions.
How do you have time to maintain a blog?
Simple. Wordpress and about 10 minutes per post (on average). By using a simple blogging platform - you can basically login from any web connection and blab away and effectively post immediately or schedule your posts. If my brain power is in full gear and I’m bursting to seams with blabber, I may write a few posts in one sitting and schedule them sporadically throughout the week.
Secondly, I type fast.
Thirdly, I’ve found a great template in which to maximize my writing time and minimize my web administrative time. I must admit though that it’s the other activities that take up much more time. Like customizing the site (minimal php expertise required), ensuring the SEO is up to par (tweaking older posts) and finding sources of revenue (which I will write about in my next post for those who are interested in how I make lunch money - a bonus to the readership).
How do you come up with the content?
Sheer idoicy? Hardy har har. No no, seriously - some things are more fun (like my momics and snapIt pictures). Here’s basically how I come up with content:
- Random and funny photos will always spark something
- Reviews - literally, you could review whatever you want from your shoes to a facial cleanser to restaurants to the pen you use at work - someone may find it useful (even if no one does, who cares!?)
- Advice - although my advice is probably skewed in opinion and can be rather harsh, I still like to give it
- Stories - maybe word of mouth stuff (like my IKEA story that was basically hearsay and nearly grilled my ass)
- News - the easiest thing to replicate and pass on and add my 2 cents to
- Professional writing - I do write for other public sites professionally and sometimes like to repeat what I’ve written or just link it
- Thoughts - don’t you have a running commentary in your head? I have one, ALL THE TIME. So sometimes, I basically write out my commentaries and share it with the world
- Children’s stuff - anything related to my children, I will usually write about. It’s easy, it’s available and it’s relatable
I try to theme things from a parent’s perspective too. I have a very specific niche of readers (and then random folks who just read the domestic helper pieces), so this blog isn’t meant to go far and wide. I’m passionate about it and love the people who are my passionate and faithful readers and that is simply enough.

I need to develop that running commentary in my head !!!!
Can you write an article about how to explain the role of your helper to your kids? Thanks!
Tracy
