Stanford Swimming School: Korean International School Review

Yes, it probably appears that ALL I talk about these days is swimming and I’ll admit, that is true.  With the heat of the summer, the availability of children’s time because they are off school and the fact that I’ve promised myself that I would put my children in swimming because it’s a survival skill.  This argument of course can be further argued that many people don’t know how to swim and survived (and are still surviving) - however, my thoughts are that I want my children to know how …

I found this pretty cool article on BBC this morning.  It talks about how a study conducted in 1930 (that’s how many years ago!?  AGES!!!)  traced children almost 5,000 kids 65 years later and discovered that the kids who had increased milk/calcium consumption had lived longer lives.  There are various reasons and factors contributing to this - mainly families that could afford milk at that time and high calcium foods (such as cheese and yogurt) came from wealthier families and thereby had access to better food, but I don’t think …

Hong Kong Island East Swimming

I really enjoy bringing my kids to this pool.  For starters, there are 3 pools to play in.

Shallow baby pool (pictured above in the front).  The depth is probably 3 inches at its deepest and it’s a great “sitting” pool for babies to adjust to water play.  It’s basically a giant bath tub (and you probably put more water in your bath tub too).
The children’s pool (picture behind the little pool).  It’s really large and long and has a variety of slides, water fountains, spouts, spurts and really neat activities …

Cool!  A friend passed this local (Hong Kong) art workshop to me.  They do art of all forms, including photography, make-up, jewelry making and everything across the spectrum of creative thinking and construction.   They even have a workshop on drawing nudes and literally, with a nude model.
I really thought that the “Parent & Child Photography” lessons were a great idea!  What better way but to start your young artist in areas outside of the academic arena and hone some self-interest hobbies?  Too bad that my children are still too young …

The Art of Photobooks

I love photo books!  They are a great way to capture photo moments in an artistic and organized way.  It also serves as a great momento to vacations, special occassions and just plain old, good-fashioned fun.  I used to make these photo books via hand.  That means, the photos were printed out physically and inserted into something like a scrap book.  It’s not a bad way to do photo ooking, but it’s messy, needs physical protection (inserts or something) and has its limitations to creativity.  Now, I do it all …

Teaching Children to Self-Feed

I am a big advocate of teaching your children to feed themselves.  Why?

It teaches them independence
It gives them empowerment (although some people may not agree on this point)
It gives me free time to do something else
It enables me to eat my meal too
It’s entertaining and a challenge
Maybe they are really ready

It always starts from the parents.  If parents don’t give their children a chance at self-feeding - who will?  I think my attitude towards self-feeding cascades to other areas (dressing themselves, going wee wee, bathing themselves).  I know some …

My First Experience at the Chinese Doctor’s

I have a cough.  It’s a slightly annoying cough that just won’t seem to go away.  Combined with this cough is a build of phlegm, but aside from that, there is nothing else wrong with me (or so it seems).  I’ve had this cough for 4 weeks!!  Having seen 3 western doctors (2 different ones) and a variety of antibiotics and cough medicine and phlegm extraction medicine, nothing really seemed to be driving it away.  Yes, the cough is gradually getting better and yes, the colour of the phlegm isn’t …

Wiki Software

So my organization has been recently looking for some cool collaboration software.  Working with teams across the region is a difficult, if not impossible task to co-ordinate meetings, tasks, action items, agreements and even just simply getting things done.  The barriers?  Well, distance for one, remote working, and language.  Here’s where I’m finding I really need to polish and enhance my mandarin!
There are some really cool, cool technology out there that assists with all types of collaboration work.  One super cool one is a wiki software.  It is like an …

Playing Badminton in Hong Kong

I love badminton.  I didn’t always love it, but since entering University and playing recreationally and then playing varsity, I’ve developed an obsession.  Most recently (well, more like just this past Sunday), my sister and I ventured out to an old favourite place - The Hong Kong Badminton Club.
It’s a recreational, drop-in English speaking badminton club for players of all levels.  It’s casual, it’s open-to-the-public and it’s always on the HK side of the island, so it’s completely accessible!  Sounds like advertising eh?  LOL - well, it almost is.  Let …
