Google Contacts Gets Beefed Up

22 June 2009 402 views No Comment

FINALLY!!!  After having posted about going completely “Googled” - meaning that I am now managing my contacts, calendar and email from one centralized place and I was complaining about the lack of features (or fields) in their contacts application, they’ve beefed it up!

You can now find fields such as:

  • Title
  • Company (It’s important now that my db is getting bigger and bigger)
  • Birthday (This is important to me - especially with so many kids)
  • Messaging Contacts (With ICQ, AOL, MSN, the works, I can’t remember it all)
  • Website
  • Nickname
  • Photo
  • And many more

I’m so glad they’ve finally put these fields in.  It is definitely comparable to Outlook now and adaptable to my iPhone contacts so much better.  Having a photo field is extremely helpful because it actually puts a face to an individual and I can show people when I’m talking about someone they “may or may not” know.

Anyways - this means I’ll need to spend a good few hours cleansing my database or filling in these fields!  ARGH, but the price to pay for long term information is a good price.  You should try using Google contacts - it really is a great application and it’s compatible with all the other google applications available.  Do I hear a Microsoft phase out?  This is especially true if you start using Open Office - you can virtually eliminate dependencies on Microsoft.  Isn’t that the point of open source?
