Beware of Chinese Restaurants…?

11 June 2009 316 views No Comment

I came across this very interesting read while fishing around on StumbleUpon.  It is basically a confessional of an ex-restaurant employee for so called “exotic” foods in China.  The malpractices of the restaurant don’t only apply to “exotic” meats, but for all their foods - even the staples of Chinese cuisine like tripe (which you can find in literally every corner in Hong Kong).

I suggest everyone who travels to China or ventures into interesting places for interesting foods read this.  Truly, I don’t doubt that this type stuff happens.  We see news in Hong Kong all the time of fake foods, foods with high levels of carcinogenic ingredients, or basically really screwed up stuff that the Chinese manage to reverse engineer and regardless of ethics, try to wank a profit off their fellow Chinese.  So I am not surprised at this article and its contents or implications.

However, this is not to say that only the Chinese do this - but it is less regulated in China.  There are standards that are enforced in western restaurants and made available to the public and it’s much harder to bribe the officials.  Let’s just say that I will be more cautious of what I eat when they say it’s an “exotic meat” and probably stick to Mc D’s when in rural China.
