Change is in the Air…
Update on May 9, 2009: SUCCESS! The migration turned out to be a breeze. The configuration turned out to be far easier than I had expected and the only hiccup that I really had was a mismatch of files across the two servers (thus a broken link for one day). This is the beauty of wordpress. And quite truthfully, that is how all migration projects should function. Plug and play. Why does software have to be that difficult? OK OK, I will save my rant of difficult software for another day, but I love open source! ~Lisa
I’m changing servers within these next 2 weeks. I’m telling you this because:
- I know the migration should be seamless from the viewers point of view, but my time is limited so I may (and will) hiccup the process
- I’m going so slow (not on purpose, but because I don’t have a dedicated 2 hours to focus on doing the migration) so just as a warning that my posts these next 2 weeks will be just as slow
- I may blank out on you. What this means is that while I am changing my DNS, www.lisatong.com will point NO WHERE into cyberspace for a period of time (expect 24-48 hours)
- I don’t have a project management plan for this - sorry, but writing the plan may probably take as long (if not longer) than the physical migration
So I’ve set your expectations, but of course, continue to check up on me and see if I’m still sane from managing this small (yet scattered) project. The problem really is the changes to the database. Any comments, new posts might not always be reflected if I don’t do it quick. That’s because a blog isn’t static.
Change is good. Change is necessary. I’m changing web hosting services because I’ve found a web hoster that is cheaper, has more flexible functionality (now I can finally implement my contact form), allows email forward to gmail, has a better control panel (see pictured above), is able to give a friend a referral fee and their customer service (so far) is superb. www.bluehost.com so far is by far the best web hosting service that I have interacted with. Another one of my blogs (www.thechinesesouplady.com) is hosted on www.godaddy.com and I find their control panel extremely hard to use. My current host www.webhost4life.com has great customer service, however, their hosting has limitations (like email forward to public addresses and issues with using smtp for email functions from the front-end) and they don’t have unlimited storage like most hosting services do these days.
It seems that my life is full of changes right now - and all good. I love change! Spice things up from your regular routine.
