You Have Big Shoes to Fill!

Why do children love to wear their parents’ shoes?  Vanessa almost takes pride and joy in trying on our shoes and now Victoria is getting into this habit.  It doesn’t happen often because the shoes are usually hidden in our shoe cabinet, but on those days where they haven’t been put away yet, the children make a beeline to the shoes and put them on.  This is with everyone’s shoes, no matter the size.  Even each other’s shoes or just the cardboard box.  If they can put it …

Work, Life, Balance and More Work?

I’ve never quite understood the concept of working long hours.  It’s not to say that I don’t work long hours.   When a project is due or when there’s a hard deadline, I will put in hours leading up to that final D-Day - but I don’t work extra hours every day.  This concept is actually quite foreign to me.  Ever since joining Hong Kong companies and working in a different culture and environment, I’ve noticed that leaving on-time (in most company cultures) is almost a silent faux-pas.  For the duration of my …

I laughed when I read this article.  Is it true?  I don’t know, but curiosity got the better of me and I’ve added “him” as a tweet that I’m following.  You can find some interesting stuff on twitter if you’re following the right feeds.  As well, you can also potentially get lots of spam feeds, but thanks to twitter’s handy BLOCK function, you can cut this spam out of your life.

Play-Doh Tacos

We’ve had this Play-Doh cooking set for some time, but it’s been recently that Vanessa has learned to roll the play doh into balls and squish it into a circle or roll it into a line.  This could be because she learns it at school and her creativity juices are overflowing.  Last night, we made Play-Doh Tacos - based on a recipe that Play-Doh provides.  The set is actually really cool because it gives you all the tools you need to create “meals”.
There’s a mold for chicken legs and …

A friend pass this article to me and it’s actually a very good read.  You should read it.  It talks about using a marshmellow resistance test on children and then co-relates it to adulthood behaviour and achievements.  My sister and I were talking about trying this experiment on our children - however I believe that i these conditions Vanessa is able to resisit and self-distract.  It’s easy to rationalize with her (more so than Victoria - although Victoria is starting to understand the concept of being “naughty”).   It’s very interesting …

My “Sugar”-Free Diet

Having increased 35 pounds in weight from my second pregnancy (while giving birth to a 5 pound 3 ounze baby), I realized that some of the gained weight was because I lost some self-control during my pregnancy.  I would tell myself that I would easily lose the weight post-birth because of breastfeeding and splurged on goodies like Mc D’s sundaes, Haagen Daaz ice cream, sour candies, soda or cola and desserts of all kinds.  Post birth?  Cold turkey the sugar and went back to my original pre-baby weight in about …

Digital Post-Its

I love digital post-its.  While searching for the perfect digital post-its, I came across the one, the original - 3M post-its.  They are great because there are a host of functions available for the simple post-it.

Change colours
Change fonts
Use numbers and bullets
Use cork boards for different categories
Hot keys for quick display

While there are a host of digital post-its available (even ones for free), none of them quite compare to 3M’s Post-It Digital Notes.  I really needed a desktop solution at work because I manage at least 10 different projects and at …

Crocs for Toddlers

What’s with this Crocs fad still alive and particularly more popular in the summer?  At the park these past few days, literally all the children (if not some adults, including myself) are all donning crocs.  It’s incredible how far and wide spread these not-so-good-looking shoes have gone.  I say not-so-good-looking because quite honestly, for me to wear a one-piece shoe (made of some rubber-plastic-new-technology hybrid), is probably not my first choice.  But I will admit that they are mighty comfortable and because of their abundance in holes, …

Vanessa’s teachers were asking for milk cartons and our family being very heavy milk consumers, donated 3 whole cartons in a span of one week to the school.  It turns out, the milk cartons became sailboats!  How fab!  Vanessa brought home this wonderfully built sailboat to put on display in our house.  We have yet to test its ability to float, but on the whole, I’d say it’s a handsome sailboat.
